Top 4 Rooms Most Susceptible to Water Damage

Date

Any rooms in your home can be susceptible to water damage. The damage could be from a leaky roof due to a severe rainstorm to a broken pipe of a malfunctioned appliance. However, there are certain rooms in your home that tend to experience water damage more than the others.

Below are the rooms that tend to be susceptible to water damage.

The Kitchen

Your kitchen has the highest chances to experience water damage because of the contents it is composed of. There are sinks, dishwashers, and refrigerators. These items are the most common causes of water damage in a home. Your sink has all the pipes that can get clogged or broken and will eventually cause water damage. Your dishwasher and your refrigerator are some of the most useful appliances in your home. However, they have the tendency to malfunction and cause severe water damage on your floor, tile flooring, walls, and cabinets.

When you are using a dishwasher, it is best not to leave it unattended. Sometimes, water damage from a dishwasher occurs during its operation.

Your refrigerator should drain the water properly to the drain pan if not, it means it is clogged. Check the drainage to avoid water damage from your refrigerator.

Inspect these appliances often. If you see any signs of a strange “behavior”, make sure to check and fix it right away. If the leak has started, repair it immediately to prevent further damage.

The Bathroom

This is another room that is most susceptible to water damage because there is so much water in it. The issues of water damage in the bathroom can be from a broken or malfunctioned water heater, improperly sealed showers, clogged toilets and tubs, and leaky faucets.

Water heaters can start to leak due to a broken drain valve. Toilets and tubs can get clogged because of the items we flush on them and will cause water to overflow. Faucets and showers may start to leak because of improper sealing. All these causes can lead to water damage, mostly to your bathroom floor and subflooring.

To keep your bathroom free from water damage, make sure that all these things are well maintained. Never flush items such as toilet paper and napkin on your tub toilet to prevent overflowing. Moreover, your bathroom can also be susceptible to mold growth. Make sure to keep it well ventilated.

The Laundry Room

There is only one appliance you have in this room, your washing machine. Washing machines are one of the most essential appliances a homeowner can have. It is very useful. However, just like your dishwasher, it can be the culprit behind water damage in your laundry room. The hoses and drain pipes can get malfunctioned causing a huge mess and can lead to expensive water damage repair.

Unfortunately, washers get malfunctioned. Old or broken pipes or hoses can cause water damage from your washer. But you can prevent your laundry room to suffer from water damage if you pay attention to the performance of your washing machine. If you see your hoses torn or broken, replace it with a new one. If the drainpipe is clogged, fix it.

The Basement

The last one but the one that is most susceptible to water damage. Your basement composed of a lot of potential causes of flooding; HVAC system, sump pump, a hot water tank, and others. All these items when malfunctioned can cause severe water damage to your basement. Moreover, basements can also develop foundation cracks that can cause water from the outside to seep in it.

Since basements are used mostly for storage; we rarely visit them. This allows leaks to go untreated for a long time, causing your basement to suffer from water damage.

Your basement can be as important as other rooms in your home. To prevent water to damage your basement, make sure to regularly go down and inspect it and the appliances inside it for any potential cause of water damage.
